METREX supports campaign to make World Metropolitan Day official in the United Nations calendar.
Prompted by the the 2015 Montreal Declaration on metropolitan areas, October 7th has informally become World Metropolitan Day.
Led by Metropolis and UN-Habitat, World Metropolitan Day is held to promote a better urban future by bringing together mayors and metropolitan leaders all over the globe to share solutions to the challenges of our communities and the planet.
A group of partners, including METREX, is now campaigning to have World Metropolitan Day designated as an International Day, adopted by the UN General Assembly.
METREX has pledged its support for this campaign, asking its network of European metropolitan regions and areas to register their official support.
METREX believes that World Metropolitan Day would allow cities, metropolitan areas and regions all over the world to raise ambitions in creating more integrated communities and, ultimately, improve people’s well-being and respond to the climate emergency.
Henk Bouwman, secretary general of METREX, said: “World Metropolitan Day is already a fixture in our annual calendar. But this official recognition from the UN General Assembly would say something powerful about the importance of the metropolitan level in delivering against European and global problems. We look forward to our continued participation in the annual activities on 7 October.”
Details of the campaign can be found on the Metropolis website. For more information, please contact Stephen Gallagher, head of secretariat, on stephen.gallagher@eurometrex.org.
