Decision-makers in Europe’s metropolitan areas look for solutions to mitigate climate change
The Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council – an esteemed Member of METREX – hosted the annual forum of the European Metropolitan Authorities Network (EMA) in Helsinki on 28–29 September. The main theme of the conference was climate change mitigation with green and digital solutions.
Officials and politicians from cities and regions in Europe’s metropolitan areas will consider common strategic solutions for metropolitan areas and decide on proposals for the future European Commission and the European Parliament. The common goal is to harness the regions’ innovation potential, energy and circular economy solutions, as well as green and digital methods as a driving force for European development.
Signed by a number of European regions and areas, including METREX President Jakub Mazur, was the Helsinki-Uusimaa Political Declaration.
The declaration is introduced as follows: “Our collective purpose is to propel the visionary agenda of the Metropolitan areas, setting forth a comprehensive strategy to advance the realms of green, digital, and labour market transformations. With unwavering determination, we pledge to foster a sustainable, innovative, and inclusive future for all.
“The achievements are already notable. And in this regard, we celebrate the recent normative resolution approved by the UN-HABITAT in June 2023. This resolution calls for the reinforcement of metropolitan governance to further advance the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through enhanced policy coherence and cross-sectoral alignment.
“Furthermore, we thank the Metrex initiative for launching a Manifesto for a Metropolitan Europe 2050. This initiative is dedicated to developing metropolitan-level solutions for a prosperous, safe, and sustainable Europe.”
