Adaptation to climate change: what role for metropolitan areas?

5 March - 2025 , Online

A collaboration between POLIMI and METREX Metropolitan Climate Challenge Expert Group

Webinar 10:00 – 12:00 CET time

Resulting from the collaboration between POLIMI, Milan Polytechnic University and the METREX Metropolitan Climate Challenge Expert Group, this event aims to discuss the emerging role of metropolitan cities in the governance of climate adaptation. Metropolitan and regional institutions are increasingly called upon to take on an active role to ensure that their territories are resilient and ready to deal with the impacts of climate change, which are already being felt in many regions across Europe.

Several metropolitan and regional institutions have already started to do so, taking on leadership roles within their regions and especially supporting municipalities in their adaptation efforts. The event will showcase some of these examples, while also focusing on the practical issues and challenges of dealing with climate adaptation at the metropolitan scale (e.g., acquiring funding, how to engage municipalities, how to transition from knowledge to implementation).

The ultimate aim is to generate discussions among metropolitan practitioners interested in pursuing climate adaptation, involving both those who have not yet initiated work on the topic and those who are further along in the process, in order to facilitate peer-to-peer exchange.

You are invited to attend!

Speakers include:

  • Margherita Gori Nocentini, PhD researcher at Milan Polytechnic University, Department of Architecture and Urban Studies,
  • Kasper Spaan, Policy developer for climate adaptation, Waternet, metropolitan area of Amsterdam,
  • Francesca Framba, Sustainable development and decision support systems service, Metropolitan City of Milan, and
  • Cinzia Cesarini, Head of supra-municipal planning service, Metropolitan City of Milan.

After each presentation, Q&A interaction and discussion will be led by the METREX Metropolitan Climate Challenge Expert Group.

The webinar will be followed by a workshop on 2nd April 2025 (10:00-12:00 CET). This follow-up event will be shaped as an interactive session, where metropolitan cities that have participated in the previous webinar can further reflect on and discuss ideas on how to implement adaptation planning in their own contexts.
