METREX welcomes Lviv to its network of European metropolitan regions are areas.
METREX, the network of European metropolitan regions and areas, has welcomed Lviv and its surrounding area as an honorary member.
Lviv is a historical city located in western Ukraine. Founded in the 13th century, Lviv is renowned for its architectural beauty and cultural heritage. The city covers an area of approximately 315,6 square kilometers.
With a population of around 800,000 people, the city boasts a unique medieval center that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Honorary membership was agreed by the Managing Committee of METREX and presented at the Cávado Region Conference, which took place in Autumn of 2023. Since then, meetings between METREX and Lviv have taken place to integrate Lviv into the METREX network.
This news follows a similar honorary membership for Kyiv, awarded in 2023, to recognise the support of Europe’s metropolitan regions and areas for Ukraine and its people in the ongoing war.
Henk Bouwman, METREX Secretary General, said: “METREX is delighted to have welcomed Lviv in our network of European Metropolitan regions and Areas. The City of Lviv and its region share a common European history that goes back for centuries: we are family! The current aggression challenges Lviv in an unprecedented way, but we hope we can support the city and its citizens with our knowledge, experience and networking. We are METREX.”
Yurii Lukashevskyi, Director of the City Agglomeration Department at Lviv City Council, said: “Lviv’s membership in METREX is a valuable opportunity for us to engage in a meaningful dialogue with metropolitan cities and territories of Europe. METREX provides a platform for exchanging experiences and collaborating on joint projects. This holds significant importance for a city within a state facing the most substantial military aggression in Europe since the Second World War. We are grateful for this opportunity and eagerly anticipate positive, mutually beneficial outcomes from our cooperation.”
