In March this year, the City of Wrocław shared its 2050 foresight strategy which predicts social, economic and spatial development over the next 30 years. Wrocław explains below why, in light of the war in Ukraine, they have revised this strategy and issued a supplement to the report, analysing the potential long-term impact.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the following response by many countries, including the economic sanctions against Russia, as well as large-scale military and financial support for Ukraine, shook the European security architecture and, to some extent, the geopolitical and economic world order.
The new order (or disorder, as some people say) is emerging, while its indistinct shape is only looming on the horizon. It is obvious that the war raging beyond Poland’s eastern border and its profound, long-term effects are going to impact – in a way that is difficult to predict – our countries, regions and cities. As a result, the scenarios for the future of Wroclaw developed in 2021 must be analysed and verified, updated and adjusted.
It is for this purpose that the supplement to the report „Wroclaw 2050. Multi-Domain Scenarios for the Future” has been published. It incorporates new important factors that may change the likelihood for any one of the four scenarios, or their respective elements, to materialize.
