09–12 May 2001, hosted by the City of Rotterdam and held in the City of Rotterdam Museum and the Tulip Hotel. Themes included – Urban renewal (social, economic and environmental aspects); the Delta Metropolis (Amsterdam, den Haag, Rotterdam, Utrecht); and Harbour development. The Expert Group on Planning for Major Events, which met in March 2001 after the Hannover World Expo, reported after its visit to the Hannover World Expo in 2001.
The SocioMETREX project, on the Social face of sustainability, was initiated to provide the foundation for the forthcoming METREX Thessaloniki 2002 Conference.
The SocioMETREX project dealt with the 4 key issues of:
- Urban migration and social sustainability, including issues of housing need and provision and community development
- Urban deprivation, including issues of urban renewal and regeneration priorities and action
- Economic inclusion, including issues of education, skills and economic development
- Inclusive accessibility, including issues of urban form and public transport.
The Rotterdam Meeting celebrated the first five years of METREX, and the City of Rotterdam prepared an Abstracts and Reports document containing all presentations. The METREX membership reached 34, and had doubled within the first five years.
